Quality sleep is a key factor in maintaining health, preventing disease, and living your best life. Research has shown that sleep habits formed in childhood can follow us into adulthood. I am here to start your children off on the right path for a lifetime of restful sleep.
If you are a pregnant woman experiencing insomnia or an exhausted parent looking for support in getting your child to sleep, I can help! To resolve sleep challenges, I use a gentle and holistic approach that looks at many elements of daily life including nutrition, self care, health and wellness, sunlight, and developing an optimal relaxation and sleep routine to help you or your child obtain restful sleep.
I do, but rarely, employ traditional sleep training methods when necessary. Often when the wide array of factors are addressed that influence sleep, traditional sleep training is not needed. If we decide to add sleep training methods to your sleep plan, a gentle technique that is consistent with your family’s parenting philosophy and values will be used.
I personally develop each sleep plan after a thorough conversation about you or your child's unique sleep challenges. I do not follow a one-size-fits-all approach. Each sleep plan is carefully created to fit the family’s beliefs, parenting style, personality, timeline, goals, and unique situation.
ABOUT CINDY DAVIES, MA, bc-dmt
I first became interested in the field of sleep consulting after having my second son, who was up all night! I read many sleep training approaches, theories on sleep, books, blogs, talked to friends and pediatricians, and hired two different sleep trainers. However, no one seemed to be able to address enough pieces of the sleep puzzle to help my son and family get the sleep we needed. Thankfully, I stumbled on the work of Mar De Carlo, who approached sleep from a holistic place, and things started to change for us.
I graduated with a BA in Psychology from Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan and an MA in Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling Psychology from Antioch University in New Hampshire. I am a Certified Happiest Baby on the Block Educator. I have completed post-graduate training in perinatal and postpartum mood disorders through Postpartum Support International, earned Board Certification through the American Dance Therapy Association, and have been trained and supervised through the International Maternity and Parenting Institute. I have a wide range of experience including working with children and families in foster care, parents and caregivers in creative movement groups, parents with twins and triplets, women with postpartum mood disorders, and many other populations.
I currently live in Ferndale, Michigan with my husband, two young sons, and two dogs. I am an avid reader, love volunteering at my children's schools, and spend my free time in the garden with my boys.

what a sleep consultant can do for you
Researchers are now finding evidence that the quality of a mother’s sleep during pregnancy can directly affect the health of her baby and baby’s future sleep habits. With so many physical, emotional, and chemical changes happening in one’s body, its no wonder that as many as 80% of pregnant women experience sleep challenges. We will work together to look at the many aspects of your life that can influence sleep and will build a helpful, relaxing plan to address your sleep needs. A pregnancy sleep plan will also include a postpartum component to help you and your baby ease into the next phase of life together.
infants 0-4 months
Everyone knows that having a newborn is exhausting. A newborn schedule seems unpredictable. We will work together to identify your infant’s sleep and activity patterns and implement strategies that will later support the development of healthy sleep habits. Infants are too young for formal sleep training, but we can establish nap and bedtime schedules and routines; set up an optimal sleep environment; and identify your baby’s sleep cues, temperament, and potential sleep challenges. An integral part of any infant’s sleep plan will be incorporating rest and self care for parents.
infants 4-12 months
During this time, babies are beginning to develop hormones that help regulate sleep. This is an optimal time to implement routines and schedules. Babies are experiencing growth spurts, hitting developmental milestones, and are trying solid foods for the first time. All of these factors can be exciting and can lead to sleep challenges. We will look at environment, diet, activity level, attachment, and many other factors that influence infant sleep when building a sleep plan. Parental rest and self care will also be built into any infant sleep plan.
Toddler-hood can be a time of especially frustrating sleep challenges. Children are gaining a sense of independence and ownership. Toddler sleep struggles may include transitioning them from a crib to a bed, lengthy bedtime battles, frequent night wakings, nap transitions and consolidation (and disappearance!), separation anxiety, and fear of the dark. We will work together to help set helpful and relaxing bedtime routines, address anxieties and fears, and make bedtime peaceful time to bond with your child.
children 3-6 years
Children at this age can experience many of the same problems as toddlers such as nightmares, growth spurts, illness, and separation anxiety. But new challenges can also arise including potty training, birth of other siblings, and starting school. We will incorporate your parenting philosophy, as well as the strengths of all family members, to develop a relaxing and restful sleep plan that supports the family and attachment between family members.

If one member of the family is experiencing sleep challenges, it is not uncommon for other family members to also experience them. It is important that we look at sleep habits of all family members and develop a healthy routine for the entire family. This may include changes to a family’s diet, activity level, or scheduling.

Dr. Harvey Karp is a pioneer in the field of comforting and soothing babies. He has developed a technique in which he uses the 5 S’s of swaddle, side position, shush, swing, and suck to quickly and effectively soothe a crying baby. As a Certified Happiest Baby on the Block Educator I am happy to talk with you about individual or group classes in Dr. Karp’s techniques!

Each package includes a 60-90 minute consultation, either in person or via phone or Skype, depending on your situation and location. We will discuss your specific sleep challenges, goals, parenting philosophy, timeline, and other topics. My goal is to investigate the root of the sleep challenge so that we can work together to find the best solution. With consistent implementation of the action steps, most sleep challenges resolve within 3 weeks of the initial consultation.

movement and relaxation for sleep
As a Board-Certified Dance/Movement Therapist and Sleep Consultant, I provide group and individual sessions to help promote relaxation of the body and mind, preparing for optimal sleep. I am happy to travel to your facility to host movement and relaxation experiences that can include creative expression, release of stress in the body, movement to music, yoga and breathing exercises, and meditation. Experiences can be tailored for many populations and age groups.
Happiest Baby on the Block
As a Certified Happiest Baby on the Block Educator, I am happy to discuss individual or group classes based on Dr. Harvey Karp’s philosophies. His discovery of the Calming Reflex and development of specific and easy-to-learn techniques have helped thousands of parents soothe their crying babies quickly, resulting in better sleep for the entire family and happier parents and babies. Workshops start at $100 for an individual in-home class or $45 per person for groups of 3 or more. Classes may not include more than 10 participants. All participants receive a Happiest Baby DVD and CD of Dr. Karp’s white noise.
